NOTE–THIS PRODUCT IS FOR DEGUS AND NOT SUGAR GLIDERS. THIS IS A COMPLETE DIET FOR DEGUS, WHOSE NUTRITIONAL NEEDS ARE DIFFERENT. THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS PELLETS THAT ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR SUGAR GLIDERS–I have kept degus as pets for nearly 20 years. Degus have unique dietary needs and special from their other rodent cousins.
Degus cannot process sugars like rats or other types of rodents can. The diet must be bland, yet offer higher levels of Vitamin C and incorporate timothy.
I start out with a pellet that is made in the UK and designed to be fed to pets with these very needs. I than buy in quality herbs and flowers that are also beneficial for their health and well being, that I mix into the diet.
Here is what the pellets contain:
Lucerne Meal, Soya Hulls, Wheat, Soybean Meal, Wheat Feed, Extruded Locust Beans, Dried Parsley, Dried Plantain, Linseed, Monocalcium Phosphate, Salt, Calcium Carbonate.
I then add the following to the mix:
Oatmeal, pumpkin seeds, dandelion leaf, candula flowers, eucalyptus leaf, red clover flower, lemon balm, timothy, hibiscus flowers, elderberry, sunflower seeds, borage flowers, rose hips and rose petals.
I also offer timothy hay daily to the group as well as an occasional cucumber, zucchini, yellow squash, lettuce or carrot.
As with my sugar gliders, my degus are fed a very high quality diet. Keeping them on this low sugar, high vitamin C diet, keeps them healthy for many years, and helps to avoid diabetes.
